Reliance Infocomm is the outcome of the late visionary Dhirubhai Ambani's dream to herald a digital revolution in India by bringing affordable means of information and communication to the doorsteps of India's vast population which is mainly rural. Dhirubhai Ambani charted out the mission for Reliance Infocomm in late 1999. He saw in the potential of information and communication technology a-once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for India to leapfrog over its historical legacy of backwardness and underdevelopment.

Working at breakneck speed, from late 1999 to 2002 Reliance Infocomm built the backbone for India — 60,000 kilometres of fibre optic backbone, crisscrossing the entire country. This network was commissioned on December 28, 2002, the 70th birth-anniversary of Dhirubhai.

This day also marked his first birth anniversary after his demise July 6, 2002.  At present, Reliance Telecom cellular services are available in 340 towns within its eight-circle footprint. Reliance works on CDMA technology (Code Division Multiple Access). Reliance offers mobile phones in collaboration with LG, Samsung and lately Nokia. LG handsets offered by Reliance are comparatively better than the GSM LG handsets available in the market.

Reliance takes the credit for creating a revolution of mobile phones by bringing extra cheap mobile phones in the market. The handsets along with connection were available in Rs. 500 and literally everyone bought it. Reliance is the biggest Indian telecommunication company.  Nokia has come up with its range of handsets for Reliance with addition of 5 at the end of its models to mark them as CDMA. The most popular Nokia phones in Reliance are 3125, 2112, 2155, 6255 and many more.
