wedding speech

A typical white wedding would involve three types of wedding speeches. The bride’s father would deliver one speech, the bridegroom and the best man would deliver the other two.

Although, these are usually all the speeches, there may be occasions where some relative or the other wants to take the stage and address the guests.

This is not completely unusual as the bridegroom’s family members may also have something to say or announce as may close friends of the couple. Maid of honor speeches are also not uncommon.

Typically, the father of the bride is introduced onto stage by the best man. In his speech, the bride’s father would welcome the groom’s parents, family members and guests. He would usually raise a toast to the health of the couple and wish them everlasting joy. He would also talk about his daughter and the love they share. He could narrate stories from her childhood. The bride’s father’s speech is usually a sentimental, heart-warming one and it is not uncommon for the audience to be moved to tears.
"The bridegroom’s speech must include replies to the other speeches on behalf of his betrothed as well. He should thank his parents as well as his in-laws for their love and affection. He should, on behalf of his wife and himself solicit the blessings of family members and he could also use the opportunity to thank all the guests for sharing their special occasion and bestowing their good wishes. He may also thank the guests for their presents if he so chooses.

The bridegroom may refer to the absence of close family members or friends and announce the reason for their absence. If a family member was unable to attend owing to an illness, the bridegroom can take the opportunity to mention the family member’s name and wish the person a speedy recovery. Towards the end of his speech, the bridegroom should propose a toast to the bridesmaids, thanking them for all the work they put in. It is also customary for the bridegroom to present bridesmaids with a small memento or token to express gratitude.

The best man wedding speech usually follows the bridegroom’s speech. It would fall upon the best man to respond to the thanks on behalf of the bridesmaids. The best man usually keeps his speech light and humourous. He may narrate short stories about the bridegroom or relate the story of how the couple met. He may talk about the first time he was introduced to the bride. He would also raise a toast to the bride and bridegroom.

It is best for all speech-givers at a wedding to stick to a strict code in order to prevent embarrassing situations. Remember this crucial points.

Make sure you keep a glass of water nearby, in case your throat feels dry. You can also pretend to sip the water while you try to remember the words from the speech you had prepared.
